New MARKEM System Creates a Fizz at Coca Cola

Markem, the UK’s leading provider of coding and marking systems, has created a fizz at Coca-Cola Enterprises, after improving labelling efficiency on the soft drinks manufacturer’s production lines.

The packaging team at Coca-Cola Enterprises approached Markem with a brief to improve accuracy and increase the speed of labelling of PET bottles, having previously used the manufacturer’s equipment and been impressed with its reliability.

Markem’s solution was to install two Cimjets on each of the production lines which would work in tandem to apply labels to the side of packs of four and six 1l and 2l bottles. This system reached higher speeds and prevented delays of the production line if rolls of labels required replacing.

The tandem Cimjet system applied labels to the side of packs of four or six one or two litre bottles. A Cimpak then labels the pallets.

Cimpaks, which labelled the pallets of the shrink wrapped bottles, were also installed at the Edmonton and Wakefield sites, where the complete system was first trialled. Markem’s systems integration team networked the Cimjets and the Cimpaks to Coca-Cola Enterprises on-site warehousing system, enabling Coca-Cola Enterprises to record precise data about the product for stock and traceability purposes.

As a result of the success of the tandem Cimjets and Cimpaks at Edmonton and Wakefield, Coca-Cola has introduced the system as standard across all UK sites including Sidcup, Milton Keynes, and East Kilbride.
