Warburtons Gets Smart With Laser Coders

Warburtons is relying on the reliability and quality of MARKEM’s SmartLase 100i laser coder for applying variable date codes to its boxes of new ‘All in One Riddlers’ pre-filled bread rolls.

The bakery adopted the coder for printing ‘best before’ and ‘display until’ dates as well as traceability codes on to the cardboard packaging, after it was impressed by the coder’s print quality and efficient performance on high speed applications.

MARKEM’s patented technology on its SmartLase 100i has provided Warburtons with the capability to laser more characters onto each box at far higher speeds and print quality than possible with any other laser coder on the market.

Engineering Manager at Warburtons’ Blackpool bakery, Chris Beer comments: “In the past we would probably have used a continuous inkjet printer (CIJ) for such an application, but installing a laser coder has proved more reliable as well as more cost-efficient in terms of lifetime costs.”

Unlike a CIJ MARKEM’s SmartLase 100i does not require any consumables, inks or solvents so it is a much cleaner coder and requires zero maintenance. This results in less downtime for manufacturers.

Day to day operation and programming of the SmartLase at the bakery is simple. A compact screen mounted next to the coder on the packaging line allows Warburtons’ operators to view exactly how the final coding will appear on the packaging.

MARKEM also provided comprehensive product training for Warburtons’ plant engineers to demonstrate the full capabilities of the coder.

Warburtons already has a well established working relationship with MARKEM, and currently employs over 100 MARKEM SmartDate thermal transfer coders on flow wrapping, tie wrapping and labelling applications.

MARKEM’s new SmartLase 100i low power, CO2 coder is the cleanest and most cost effective method for coding primary packaging such as cartons, labels, glass and PET bottles.
